The Hunger Games

Katniss is a sixteen year old girl with olive skin, brown hair, and green eyes. She looks nothing like her mother and her little sister Primrose or Prim for short. Katniss’s father died in a coal mine accident. Her best friend is Gale. Gale could be her brother they look so much alike. This book takes place in Panam. Panam is a country in the future that is where the United States is today. Katniss lives in District 12 and that is the poorest district. Each district has a main export and 12 is coal so everyman who lives there is a coal miner. There are 12 districts and the capital. The capital is where all the very important people live. The capital wants to keep power over the districts so they limit what they can do and where they can go. They are not allowed to hunt and they have fences to keep people inside the district. Katniss and Gale jump the fence and hunt for food and sell it at the black market. Katniss’s main thing in life is to keep Prim protected. Her and her mother have a bad relationship because she basically a banded then when their dad died.
The story starts out on the reaping for the Hunger Games. This is Prim’s first year in the reaping. One male and one female between the ages of 12-18 are drawn every year to represent their district. You can also place your name in more times in exchange for food for your family. Katniss and Gale place their name in many times so their younger siblings only have to place their name in a couple of times. The Hunger games started because of rebellious acts by the districts many years ago. When the rebellion started there were 13 districts and now there are only 12. The capital completely blew up disrtict13. The capital says to make sure that this doesn’t happen again that every district must offer two tributes every year. Then the 24 tributes must fight to the death until there is only one left and that one tribute is the victor and gets to live.
During the reaping Prim’s name gets drawn. Katniss then volunteers to take her place and save Prim’s life. The boy tribute from district 12 is Peeta Melark. Peeta is the baker’s son. Peeta has also liked Katniss since grade school. Peeta saved Katniss and her family’s life. It was after Katniss’s dad died and they had no food or money. Katniss went out looking for food and found none. She didn’t want to disappoint her family and go home empty handed so she sat in the rain to starve. Peeta saw her and burned some bread on purpose so he would have to throw it away. Peeta threw the bread to Katniss and kept her and her family from dying. Katniss says to herself that she won’t become close to him because she will just have to end up killing him and she doesn’t want to be friends with someone she knows that she’s going to kill or be killed by.
Effie is their escort from district 12 to the capital. Effie lives and works in the capital for the hunger games. Effie is snobby and rude. They take a train to the capital and once they arrive their training begins.
Katniss and Peeta’s mentor is Haymitch. He is the only person from district 12 to ever win the Hunger Games. The Winners of the previous hunger games are the mentors for the new tributes. The mentors are the ones who get you sponsors and send you things you need in the arena. Katniss and Peeta train in the training center before the games begin they train in weapons and climbing and how to make fires and what food is edible and what foods aren’t. Each of the 24 tributes is given a score on his or her abilities. The highest score you can get is a 12. Peeta gets a score of 8 and Katniss gets a score of 11. They also get interviewed so they can get sponsors. Sponsors are people who give your mentors money to help pay for things to be delivered to you in the arena. During the Interviews Peeta confesses that he has liked Katniss since grade school. This makes Katniss extremely mad because she knows that after tomorrow that she or hopefully someone else would have to kill Peeta.
Before they entered the arena Haymitch told them to get away from the cornucopia and find a safe place with food and water. The cornucopia is a big container with supplies and it is where most of the tributes get killed. Peeta listened and left right away. Katniss goes in and finds a backpack with supplies and while she is running away she almost gets killed by a flying knife. Katniss runs far into the woods and soon figures out she has no water. She looks for 2 day and still no water. Then she finally is too dehydrated to go on and she lies down on the ground and closes her eyes and waits to die. But then she feels something cold on her leg, she found water and is saved. Katniss is now deep in the woods where no one can find her and with water and plants and animals to eat.
Katniss then learns that Peeta has teamed up with some of the tributes that were expected to win. These tributes are called carriers. She knows that they will be looking for her because of her high score. Katniss decides that she needs allies so she picks a 12 year old girl from district 11. Her name is Rue. Rue is good at finding food you can eat and climbing in trees. She reminds Katniss of prim. They decide to go by the carrier tributes camp and blow up all their food. So Rue lights a fire for a distraction so Katniss can blow up the food. Katniss blows up the food then goes to try and find Rue. She finally finds her stuck in a net. Katniss cuts her out but then a boy throws a spear into her stomach. Katniss then shoots the tribute in the neck with an arrow and he dies. Rue knows that she is going to die so she says that she want Katniss to win. Katniss covers Rue’s body in flowers before the capital comes and gets her body. She does this to so respect to Rue, her family and district 11.
Then all of the sudden the game makers make a rule change and now two tributes if they’re from the same distinct can win. Then Katniss realizes that Peeta said that he liked her to give them both a chance to win. The game makers made this rule change so the “star crossed lovers “can have a chance to live. Katniss goes out and try’s to find Peeta. When she does find him she finds him cut so bad that he can barely walk. They go and find a cave where nobody can find them. Peeta is cut badly and if he doesn’t get medicine soon he will die. Katniss needs to find a way to get that medicine and she needs sponsors so she tells Peeta that she likes him to and she kisses him. Then the game makers call a banquet they say that what you need will be there. Katniss knows the medicine will be there. She goes to get the medicine for Peeta. As she is leaving the same girl throws a knife at her head and cuts her. They are now fighting each other. Then the boy from distinct 11 kills the other girl because he thinks that she killed the Rue from his distinct. Then he takes what he needs and leave. Then Katniss get the medicine and goes back to the cave. She puts it on his cut and it gets better almost instantly.
There are 4 tributes left Peeta, Katniss, District 1, and District 11. The game makers send out some dogs that kill the district 11 tribute and are now coming after the 3 remaining tributes. Peeta and Katniss make it on top of the cornucopia in time but the boy from distinct 1 doesn’t and he gets killed. Peeta and Katniss are the only two remaining tributes. But then the game makers make another rule change that says only one person can be the victor. Peeta and Katniss don’t want to kill each other so they both say that they are going to eat poison berries at the same time and both die. The game makers have to have a victor so they say that they both won and are both the victors of the 74 th annual hunger games. The capital is very angry because nobody is supposed to show up the capital and they think Katniss did.
